The Late Archaic, phasing into the Woodland Period saw more changes in point/ knife form than easily counted. Some were really artistic knapping, others, like this "Stemmed" were more 'utilitarian'--they served as hafted knives but lacked the fine pressure flaking even the Adena peoples used. Too, like this Spencer County, Indiana, Holland Flint 3&3/16" flat-stemmed-knife the knappers went back to a four-sided sharpening technique--nothing wrong with that, but these big knives were work tools, not much more. Note on this piece how one shoulder was angled upwards, Ashtabula Points used that technique a lot--and possibly that was a 'preferred technique' if that barbless corner was the more used side of the knife--think how a steel knife generally is only used on one edge. Authentic, strong medial ridge at slightly over 3/8" thick, 1&1/4" wide--they needed a strong knife, they made one that fit their needs, give them credit, I think. Shipping is $8.00, checks or M.O>s are the payment options as I do not use paypal-type services--Roy A.
