81432--Illinois auriculate base side notch,hornstn
An Edwards County, Illinois, find by Norman Reid, 1951 if I'm correct in reading the year Norman notated on the point (the last digit is either a 1 or a 6). The 1.75" hornstone point, whether you wish to call it a Contracted Base Big Sandy or a Graham Cave---or even an 'exhausted Thebes', it's in that very early part of the Early Archaic Period--7500--8,000 BP. Basal grinding is excellent, the tip has a "Thebes-like" twist to it (see pic) that only comes with extensive sharpening of the blade. The tip has some rub polish to indicate the end was used as a buffing tool after there was little cutting edge left to the knife.
