When I was a muuuucch younger collector these Lost Lakes (with the very long barbs) were called "Deep Notches". The name speaks for itself, doesn't it? This Indiana Hornstone-with-cortex Lost Lake is out of the Spencer--Perry County, Indiana, area--length is a 'reduced' (by use and Early Archaic period salvage) 1&15/16". Width is an excellent 1&11/16" and-- to tell you the blade was once much longer--thickness is 3/8" max. When you have that thick of a blade you are assure the hafted knife started out considerably longer. As photographed, there are a couple tiny (yellowed) glue spots--the estate auction had two emptied-out Riker Frames, so my guess is that the point (and others in the small collection) had been 'tacked-in' with glue. The basal edge is heavily ground. Not seeing a steep bevel, I'd say the knife was broken, salvaged, and lost before it'd seen a great deal of use--otherwise the bevel sharpening would have been steeper, the blade more narrow. The close up photo should show how long and ex-curvate the longer barb is, fine, fine knapping. The collection history I have will go to the next owner, provenance matters. Shipping is $8.00 with payment only by one of these three methods: checks, cash, or money orders. I do not use paypal-type payment services--Roy A.
