A Warrick County, S.W. Indiana, find, a Cobbs Knife, Early Archaic, nicely bevel sharpened on only one face--the reverse face was so flat the ancient knapper used very little beveling on the left edge. A basal corner notch looks like it may have been the first step towards converting a triangular knife into either a Dovetail or a Lost Lake (the two most common adaptations of a Cobbs Knife). Something halted that basal change, maybe the knife was too efficient a tool as-is (was)--they simply didn't extend the deep notches needed for those two point styles--and no basal grinding as there was still too much knapping to do before that finish-out work. Length is an excellent 3&3/8" with 1&3/4" width--at the single thickest spot the blade doesn't quite reach 3/8". Patina is great, even some field dirt on the reverse--you see the piece exactly as I got it. Every possible detail is guaranteed authentic. Shipping is $8.00 with checks or M.O.s welcomed. Sorry, I do not use paypal-type services--Roy A.
