Which particular 'point type' name you wish to classify this contracted stemmed point as depends on where you collect--if, instead of Jefferson County, S.E. Illinois where the point was collected, it came from most anywhere in Kentucky or in Indiana, you'd likely use the Pickwick--Mulberry Creek designation. If you're in Illinois a "Gary" might be more what you're familiar with, but the flaking style seems to clearly indicate the Late Archaic Period, the lack of stem edge grinding, the blade shape, those all type the piece as "Just before the Woodland Period". I'll stick with "Pickwick; research tells me the culture did spread through southern Illinois to some degree--everyone is entitled to their own appraisal. No questions on authenticity, though, mineral deposits that took several thousand years to form, they're present. Length is 3&4.5 sixteenths by 1&1/4" and with a 3/8" medial ridge thickness--strong knife. Flint is hornstone but with something like a heat-altered cortex forming the stem--vibrant colors, iron oxides in shades that almost always indicate exposure to heat (but no pop-outs, so the heat wasn't a deliberate heat treating, the flint survived). Summary--one well made, collectible artifact--with collection history that'll go with it. Shipping is $8.00, checks or M.O.s are welcomed. Sorry, I do not use paypal-type services--Roy A.
