A hard "impact fracture" caused the Late Archaic user/ hunter to salvage the tip of this Indiana Hornstone Turkey Tail into a gouge (or burin). A close up of the 'new tip' shows the few small 'adjustment flakes' the hunter made. Being a hafted knife, well, aerodynamics weren't that important, he wasn't going to be throwing the hafted knife, only using it for food/ hide prep. For hides, well, you lived in a hide covered home, you dressed in hides, you made a lot of leather-punch holes--a 'reamer' was important to your survival. I left the S.W. Indiana field dirt exactly as the piece came to me--you want to clean it, it's your choice, but in these photos you can see how the piece was found (and brought home--THAT'S patina). Length is very slightly past the 3" mark on my caliper,1&3/16" width--a full 3/8" center thickness. Combine the center thickness and that rather large Turkey Tail base and you know the width started in the 1&5/8", the length in the 3&5/8" range +/- (may have been slightly longer, I think, as it was first made). Note the neat quartz crystal cavity on the main face--center of the hornstone nodule at one time, the knapper incorporated the 'vug' into the final knife design.
