Priority mail to ship the piece, $13.00--USPS rates are a bear--sorry about that. The Mid Archaic-type axe, 6500 (or so) BP, three-quarter grooved and made of a dense Greenstone--pick it up, you'll understand, it's heavy. The finder hunted Wabash and Edwards Counties, S.E. Illinois--the auctioneer of the estate knew the creek that the man used to hunt, so that'll be part of the provenance sent along with the piece. Length is 4&1/8", height is 3&3/16", and right on 2" thickness on the heel. The bit shows the axe went through a number of use-repair cycles, a ding to the bit that was reground, a ding that wasn't repaired by regrinding. The easiest way I can say that is that the tool saw a lot of use. A 'scuff mark' shows on one side but no obvious plow scratches--the area of the best polish is in the groove itself--they really ground that groove to a high polish. This piece is real, period.
