Start off with the thinness: my $2 caliper (thanks Harbor Freight) can't find even one spot that goes over 1/4" thickness--for a blade that's 2&7/8" by 1&3/8", that's a remarkable thinness. At first I thought there was once a stem on the blade (Red Ocher Blades are Turkey Tail Culture, Late Archaic), but some study makes me thing this piece had a small 'stack' very near the basal edge, and the 2500BP knapper did some grinding to smooth the area, he found any additional chipping would break a workable blade. You'll feel the grinding, and see how what was the bottom edge of a starting flake was left with minimal finish out--the grinding. Out of Daviess County, S.W. Indiana, the piece does have one spot of damage on the side of the tip, just an edge flake that shows a completely different patination to the hornstone--dark, dark gray. Either a later culture usage, or a freeze-thaw break, either one could be responsible, but it's definitely not modern.
