Out of a small town north of Carbondale, Illinois, a very nice small collection with some good flints. This big Hopewell is made of Illinois Hornstone, aka Cobden Flint or Jackson County Flint. The extra large concentric rings in the flint identify the material better than anything--also, Cobden tends to patinate in a brown shade due to the minerals present in the flint itself. This big blade was knapped with the 'heart' of the nodule along one blade edge--that also made for some 'stacks' the Hopewell knapper had more than a little trouble fashioning the one blade edge. Where that's telling is in the thickness which reaches 7/16" on the edge. Being Hopewell, there is no basal edge grinding, but you can find grinding in the wide basal notches (where it was more important). Length is a long 3&5/16", width is 1&7/16".
