82219--Wide stem Hornstone Benton, Indiana
Out of Spencer County, S.W. Indiana, made of a very patinated, mineralized Indiana Hornstone--3&3/16" by nearly 1&1/4"--3/8" max thickness between the barbs (where a point/ knife should be thickest. The sharpening technique the 6500BP knapper used left the tip slightly twisted, an almost 'bevel like' trick Early Archaic blade sharpeners used--nice workmanship when you study it up close. Something unusual for Benton Culture is that the longer side of the stem show heavy edge grinding--even the basal edge has some grinding. That (grinding) wasn't often seen on Bentons. You can easily see the wear on & above both barbs, so possibly the basal edge treatment was a 'salvage technique' to get the big hafted knife back on a handle.
