Pickwicks (and Mulberry Creeks), those Mid-to-Late Archaic points can sometimes be found in Illinois--Jefferson County, in this instance--made of Illinois flints. This one is a very good grade of Illinois Kaolin Flint, 3&1/16" from well formed tip to the deep red of the basal edge (cortex, I assume). The point has the pronounced shoulders of the Pickwicks, the more worked (sharpened) blade edge being incurvate above the barb, and showing a white line of fossil inclusion angling into the blade medial ridge (7/16" max thickness on a 'stack in the flint). Very nice patina, I see in the ancient wear and mineralization. This was one of the best of a 91 year old's' collection (that I saw--I missed his first auction). Every detail is guaranteed authentic. A quick 'aside story' that I thought was 'neat': the auction didn't provide the mans' name, so leaving town I stopped by the local cemetery, perhaps something to be learned...I met a fellow there who was having lunch so he could be near his wife's grave--as luck would have it it turned out to be the collecting partner of this points finder. Provenance like that, awesome. Rest in peace, Paul. Okay, back to "listing stuff"--shipping is $8.00, checks or M.O.s welcomed. Sorry, I do not use paypal-type services--Roy A.
