Rummaging through a box of field finds from an elderly farmers' estate, Gibson County, Indiana, was a "What's this doing in Indiana?" Located off the Wabash River, a natural travel & trade corridor, obsidian made its way from Yellowstone Park area to Hopewell sites along area rivers. I've (personally) found both flakes of the volcanic glass, and 'raw' obsidian fist-sized pieces, but this is the first tool I can recall--was it a Thumbnail Scraper, or were small--razor sharp flakes being removed for some purpose, that I can't say. It does seem the fragments chipped-off would be too small to use...then again if you were constantly picking out thorns, scalpel-sharp volcanic glass pieces were better than a needle. Backlighted you see the greenish-black color of the material, the translucence of the 1&1/2" diameter piece--thickness is between 5/16" and 3/8". Neat, neat piece. Shipping is $8.00 with checks or M.O.s welcomed. Sorry, I do not use paypal-type services--Roy A.
