A heat treated Burlington Chert Cache Blade, 5&1/2" by 4&1/8"--I'll use 7/8" thickness as that's the farthest in my caliper will allow me to measure--could be the piece hits a full 1" thickness in the center, but I can't get the caliper that far in from the edge. The first thing I looked for in evaluating the piece (authenticity) was the lack of white hinge fractures--second thing I looked for is the yellow (proper ageing) of the edges when the blade is rotated right underneath a strong back light. Third, of course, is finding black mineralization in the hinge fractures using a 10x loop. All three things indicate an authentic blade--this is 'step one' when an artifact seems 'clean' as this one is. The piece was out of a St. Claire County, Illinois, collection, but did the person find or buy the artifact, that I have no way of knowing. With Cache Blades, you always hope they were found...well, in a Cache. "Were there more" is a question I don't have an answer for. On the surface of this big blade are 'vugs' (cavities), there are pockets of quartz crystal, and some tiny holes with mineralization. Neat piece. Shipping is $12 due to size & weight. I only take payments that arrive through the U.S. Mail: checks (or cash) and money orders. I do not use paypal-type payment services--Roy A.
