A very small S.W. Indiana collection, a family that picked up about anything 'out-of-the-ordinary' on the small site that was across the road from their Gibson County, Indiana, home. Two cultures were all I saw represented: Hopewell (in very small numbers) and a Mid-to-Late Archaic occupation (Blunts and dart points). One of those two periods of occupation must have found a use for fossils--brought them home. This small (1&1/2" by 7/8") coiled-up fossil (snail or a tiny coiled snake?) had what looks like all the organic material replaced by silicate--quartz. Was it a prehistoric shell dweller', or something else--you might find out with some research, but what any of us would find interesting is that the bottom of the piece shows extensive use polish--that's not a natural polish, it's human made. So--what were the users doing with the stone? Speculation is about all any of us have--personally, I would think it was a leather working tool, the bottom is just too heavily polished for any other use that comes to mind. Neat piece. Shipping is $8.00, checks, cash, or M.O.s welcomed, but please note I do not use paypal-type services--Roy A.
