Out of the Montgomery--Bond County area of south central Illinois, decent, decent Cobbs Knife, Early archaic Culture in origin. Instead of the flat base this one has the 'classic' rounded base--2&7/8" by 1&9/16"--with a basal area thickness of 3/8" (top half of the knife is considerably thinner, better knapped. With the 'work flakes' of the base all mineral deposit coated, but still showing the thinning technique the knapper used, I think the knife had been considerably longer, the base snapped, the hunter reshaped the base to fit the flint he had--photos should pick up on a flat spot on the corner of the base--as-first-fashioned (stage one), that wouldn't have been there, the basal edge would have been very uniform, thinned. You study points (and flint knives) to understand both WHAT they did--and WHY.. Shown with the tip towards the camera, note the great beveled edge. The flint: my best guess is that the knife is made of the Illinois version (Illinois deposits) of Attica--aka "Indiana Green"--the mottling of color is correct for "green". Shipping is $9.00, USPS rates have us ALL over a barrel. I welcome checks or M.O.s but do not use paypal-type services--Roy A.
