Both the Mississippian Era peoples (Cahokia, Illinois) and the Hopewell peoples showed a special 'affection' for Kaolin Flint--this piece, well, St. Claire County, IL, was about the closest the last owner could remember where it was from--and he wasn't even too positive he had that correct. The Celt--or chisel--is exactly right for that area of western Illinois, patina, knapping, incredible polish--and the flint, of course. Combine those, every possible detail is guaranteed authentic. Length is 3&9/16" by 1&9/16"--a center thickness of 7/8", and STILL light passes through the high silicate flint. The entire surface of the Celt/ Chisel/ Adz is polished with both ends showing work polish. The thinner end has a more thinned blade (or bit), far more edged compared to the thicker end. That end has a bit, but not as 'crisp edged' as the far end. The same sort of polish extends to the sides, the edges, one side is heavily ground the other is ground but less heavily. Exactly how the 1500--2,000BP user held and used the artifact might be strictly the 'current owners'" opinion--maybe hafted, maybe hand-held--you get to decide once the piece goes in your collection. Shipping is included with the price, checks or M.O.s are welcomed. Sorry, I do not use paypal-type services--Roy A.
