Lost Lake point measuring 2 5/16 inches, crafted from highly patinated Fort Payne chert. The surface shows strong, even age patina that only comes from thousands of years in the ground.
Lost Lake points are associated with the Early Archaic period, approximately 9,250–9,000 years BP, placing this piece right at the beginning of the Archaic tradition. These are contemporaneous with early corner-notched forms like Kirk, but are easily recognized by their distinctive features.
This example shows the classic Lost Lake traits—deep, narrow corner notches, extended barbs, and a smoothed basal edge. The blade exhibits beveling, giving it that slightly twisted, rhomboid cross-section often seen from resharpening over time.
There is an ancient break on one wing tip, well patinated and clearly old, not modern damage. It speaks to the artifact’s long life and use rather than detracting from it.
Found in Kentucky, outside the core distribution but not uncommon for Fort Payne material to show up in surrounding regions.
